My name is Tyler Halverson. I’ve grown up, and lived in Big Lake, all my life aside from attending college. I currently am going into my 5th year teaching 4th grade at Independence Elementary STEM School. Aside from teaching I am an assistant coach for our high school football program and a 9th-grade coach for our baseball program. I enjoy deer hunting, ice fishing, playing softball in the summer with friends, and anything active. Additionally, my parents live in Big Lake and are active members with my mom owning an at-home daycare and my dad being a part of the city council.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
The Third Rail not only has great burgers, but their tachos are pretty great. Pizza Factory is always spot on for whatever day and time you want some pizza. Not necessarily a restaurant, but Coborn’s Deli has quality sushi.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived in Big Lake for all of my 26 years. I’ve been a 4th grade teacher at Independence Elementary STEM School for the past 4 years.

Q: Do you have any pets? If so, what are they and what are their names?
No

Q: What advice would you give to people living in Big Lake?
“We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can always build our youth for the future.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt. Each day I’m fortunate enough to work with great teachers, families, and students all of which appreciate your support of our schools.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
Attend a Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl. It’s a long shot, but it may happen in my lifetime. Also, I’d like to run a full marathon.

Q: What is your favorite current or former business in our community?
Fudgin’ Delicious Ice Cream was great for their wide variety of ice cream selections!

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I enjoy all the walking paths right off of the lakes. Everyone is friendly and happy to be experiencing nicer weather than what our winters provide us.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Continuing to teach and coach.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I got two of my fingers accidentally cut off by a trailer hitch when I was four. Luckily they were able to be sewn back on. I 10/10 do not recommend putting your hands near a hitch being hooked up as it will in fact hurt very badly.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Both of my parents. I believe my mom has made a significant impact on every child that’s went to her at-home daycare. Seeing the impact she had and the positivity she went into each day with is the reason I went into education. Additionally, my dad as he was a Big Lake Firefighter for 30 years. The time he gave back to this community to ensure family members were safe and made it home made a lasting impact on me.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of Big Lake?
Growing, maintaining a small town environment, and Spud Fest.
