Who was Dylan Robert Pishney?

Dylan was born September 30th, 2003. He was the oldest brother of 5 siblings: Charley, Lily, Colton, Ike, and Theo. Just like in his home life, he was very much a leader in everything he did despite his congenital medical condition. Dylan had RRP (Recurrent Respiratory Papillmatosis) which caused growths in the airway that needed to be surgically removed, in his case about twice a year. This disease affected the sound of his voice and vastly affected his airway. Although most people would have difficulty with this disease in everyday tasks, Dylan pushed himself in numerous sports/activities: hockey, football, boxing, tennis, and trap shooting. He lettered and received special awards in each of these.

Dylan was also very studious. He was in excel classes throughout elementary, middle, and high school. He was nominated to be in the National Honor Society. Despite the difficulties that covid brought with distance learning, his grades never faltered.

Dylan’s faith also took precedence in his life. He was very actively involved as a youth leader at Saron Lutheran Church. He went on to become a youth member of the board of directors for The Wave Youth Center. He explained how important these youth groups were, especially for children that feel “different” like he did. He wanted a safe place for everyone to belong. I have heard several stories that Dylan went out of his way to welcome the kids that struggled the most. Some stating, that he was their first friend.

Anyone that knew Dylan, knew that he was an avid outdoors person. He loved to hunt and fish. Having had three jobs and sports, he spent what little free time he had to enjoy these activities at which he was incredibly good.

On July 31st, 2020, Dylan died by suicide. During this time, restrictions were very much in place due to covid. Although this was the case, hundreds of people gathered at the ice rink in town, the visitation at the funeral home, and for the funeral at Saron Lutheran. His passing not only deeply affected his family but the entire community. He left an impact and legacy that most do not, especially at the age of sixteen. After his passing he has been honored in many ways. He has a bench and plaque at the outdoor rink in town. The Becker Big Lake High School hockey team has his jersey framed and hanging in the Princeton ice arena. Each year a senior player from the team will be presented with the “Dylan Pishney Award.” To be eligible, the player must have a high GPA, attitude, work ethic, team player, leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication. These are all qualities that Dylan possessed.

Our family will always be devastated by the loss of Dylan. What brings us the most peace is the many accomplishments he has made and the impact he continues to make even now. We hope that his story has helped those struggling around him. You would never know that a person like Dylan dealt with the pain that he did. Despite what he was going through he was always kind to others. For those reading this, make time for your loved ones and treat others like Dylan did.
